  • The Importance of Breastfeeding Baby

The Importance of Breastfeeding BabyBreastfeeding is one of the most beautiful acts a woman can perform, as it strengthens the bond between mother and child and it provides all the necessary nutrients baby needs to develop into a healthy child. By making the choice to breastfeed, moms are securing a healthy future for baby, and a healthier future for themselves. Moms can also greatly benefit from breastfeeding baby, which adds to the lengthy list of reasons to breastfeed.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that mothers breastfeed their infants exclusively for at least the first six months. For mothers who are unable to breastfeed, there are other options they can turn to, like milk bank associations that provide moms with donated milk. Here are 10 ways that breastfeeding benefits mom and baby:

    1. Breast milk contains all of the vitamins and nutrients that your baby needs, plus it contains substances that fight and protect against diseases and infections.
    2. Children who were breastfed score higher on IQ tests.
    3. Moms who breastfeed have a reduced risk of breast cancer and Type 2 Diabetes.
    4. It can protect your child from obesity as breastfed babies have healthier eating patterns.
    5. Breastfeeding can also protect your child from developing allergies and provides a layer of protection to baby’s intestinal tract.
    6. It can help moms return to their pre-pregnancy weight quicker and easier.
    7. It does not cause upset stomach or digestive issues like baby formula can.
    8. Studies have shown that breastfeeding can lower baby’s risk of SIDS. The CDC recommends breastfeeding for as long as possible to reduce this risk.
    9. Breastfeeding can lower mom’s stress level and her risk of developing postpartum depression. Nursing releases oxytocin, which promotes relaxation and helps mom bond with baby.
    10. Breastfeeding can also lower baby’s risk of developing asthma.

The Human Milk Banking Association of North America supports breastfeeding and the health of mom and baby by providing safe, pasteurized donor milk for babies in need. Their milk banks receive surplus milk and dispense it after the donated milk has been pasteurized and tested to make sure it’s safe for any baby.
